Catedral Diocesana, Zipaquira

#2 of 22 in Historic Sites in Cundinamarca Department
Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Located in the historical center of Zipaquira, Catedral Diocesana dominates the landscape with its two bell towers. Construction of the neoclassical cathedral began in 1805 and took a full 111 years to complete. Stand in the adjacent square and snap a few photos of the stately exterior, then step inside to see the stone and brick interior, contrasted with the wooden pews. Two rows of massive pillars support an arched roof all the way down to the altar. Though mostly illuminated artificially, some small windows on the side walls also provide lighting. • The Cathedral was being repaired as we visited so I wasn't able to see inside but the link between this and the Catedral de Sal was great.
