Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Brimming with timeless elegance and historical significance, Plaza de Bolivar lays claim to the title of the heart of the original town. This busy square is the natural starting point for visitors touring the capital city, anchored at the center by a bronze statue of Simón Bolivar, which was created in 1846 by Italian Pietro Tenerani. Bolivar was a Venezuelan military leader instrumental in securing the independence of Colombia independent of Spanish rule. The Palace of Justice, parliament buildings, mayor's office, and a cathedral anchor each of the four sides of the city square. All of the surrounding buildings have their own style, dating between the 17th and 19th centuries. You'll find many street performers, stores, and cafes in the area.
