Escape from the busy streets of El Centro and retreat to the cool, calm masterpiece of Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Pobreza. Built in 1890, the former Catholic church boasts a truly unique architectural style--with 13,503 pieces of curly cumin wood forming an intricate latticed ceiling. The exterior and interior are both of brick construction, the latter decorated with sculptures and figurines. Pope Pius XII elevated the church to a cathedral in December 1952. Poke your head in, gaze at the ceiling, and tour the catacombs if the gate is open.
