Templo de Santo Domingo, Cartagena

#9 of 40 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
A historically significant place of worship, Templo de Santo Domingo, housed Dominican friars until the 19th century. The church displays a distinctly rustic colonial architecture, its chipped orange facade counterbalancing the look of the plaza that stands before it. Inside, the decoration is simple and authentic, with gravestones laid on the floor and a deep blue dome over the main alter. The stone arches of the central nave show off the architect's skills and carry their age rather well. • The layout of the church is spacious. Even if it's antique it is very bright and joyful. The piped-in music was soothing and the people were all enthusiastic. The plaza in front and the total ambience makes you feel like you are in Europe
