Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa, Cartagena

4.1
At the highest point in Cartagena, Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa features an impressive interior, matched only by the  views stretching over the entire city. Founded in 1607 as a small wooden chapel, the convent now houses an image of the patroness of the city, La Virgen de la Candelaria. Outside stands a statue of a murdered local priest, killed for trying to spread Christianity. No public transport traverses the switchback road winding its way to the top of the hill, and walking up isn't advised for safety reasons in the extreme climate. Take a cab and try haggling for a better price. Plan your Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa visit and explore what else you can see and do in Cartagena using our Cartagena online travel planner .

  • The convent of La Popa de la Galera is an almost obligatory walk, professed or not the Catholic religion, very mystical, of a very important natural beauty, overwhelming atmosphere and much peace, recommendable

  • It is certainly convenient to reach this convent by vehicle, as it is on top of a fairly high mountain. It is preserved in very good condition, and we were even informed that it is in use as a convent, since there would be 4 or 5 monks in its outbuildings. It is worth touring for its beauty, for its tips written on large paintings bounded to the walls.

  • We hired a driver and toured this facility in the morning. The monastery was beautiful, with lots of history. The flowers in the courtyard were delightful. The church had gold leaf on carved wood from the 1600's. This is a must see if you are visiting Cartagena! You can view the entire city, both the Walled City and downtown Cartagena! Spectacular views!
  • Lovely views, great courtyard full of bougainvillea. Attractive chapel though the gold altarpiece not really our more puritan taste.
