Must see · Mountain · Island
Marvel at the 33 m (108 ft) gilded statue of Guanyin Goddess of Mercy and Compassion at Putuo Mountain (Putuoshan), one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism. Part of the Zhoushan archipelago, this spectacular island-mountain is arguably the most beautiful of the 400 islands--peaks of a submerged mountain range. Take the ferry from Zhoushan to explore the mountain's three major temples, plus a cable car offering spectacular scenery. Walk along two long sandy beaches, or take a stroll in the woods and observe a 1,000-year-old camphor tree amid magnificent hornbeams. A popular tourist place and pilgrimage spot, the island also has modern facilities. • I came to visit this place with mom as she was the one who wanted to come here. This island is filled with temples and people come here to pray. Best day to visit is not on the weekend. We came on Thursday and it was already lots of people, but it was not packed and crowded. As we were leaving the island on Friday, people were starting to arrive and it was very crowded. To get around the island, it is not hard. There are shuttle buses that you can catch, and pay as you go. On the bus station, it tells you the next bus destination, so you won't be lost. Basically, you will not be lost in this island. The people here can only speak Chinese (Mandarin), but there are some basic signage in English which may be enough to direct us. Really enjoyed the view from the cable car where you can have a bird's eye view looking out the island. It is not a mainstream tourist destination, but it is still good to visit.
  • Well worth the visit, just maybe not during a golden week holiday. A little bit of paradise just outside of Shanghai, which works well when the traffic is not bad.
