Cloud Rock Leaning Pagoda (Yunyan Ta), Suzhou

#6 of 40 in Historic Sites in Suzhou
Religious Site · Landmark
With its seven stories rising to 47 m (154 ft), Cloud Rock Leaning Pagoda (Yunyan Ta) stands on the top of Tiger Hill overlooking Suzhou. First completed in 961 CE, this ancient brick octagonal structure defied takeovers by five dynasties and 10 kingdoms, but only started to lean as a result of its six-ton weight. To reach the pagoda, you will need to complete a pleasant hike through woods and past a collection of stone sculptures, which lie around in the well-maintained park and gardens. The leaning pagoda makes a popular visiting spot for locals and the area provides a convenient escape from the city. Due to restoration and the cracking of one of the pillars, no public access to the top is allowed.
