Yamdrok Yumtso Lake, Nagarze County

#3 of 61 in Parks in Tibet
Must see · Water Body · Historic Site
Encircled by snow-capped mountains and dotted with small islands, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet, believed to be the transformation of a goddess. The lake and its surroundings bears a historical significance relating to the second incarnation of Buddha, who brought Buddhism to Tibet. Hike the green hills and watch how the color of the water changes from turquoise and sapphire to jade-green, depending on the sunlight. You may occasionally run into herds of goats and yaks, guarded by Tibetan mastiffs, as well as praying pilgrims. One of the islands houses the only monastery in Tibet headed by a woman--a female re-incarnation of Buddha. • Picturesque area. A 72-kilometers lake, winding itself through mountains at an elevation close to 5,000 meters. The sign carved into a natural rock by the lake indicates an elevation of 4,998 meters.  more »
