The main shrine for Gelug-school Buddhism and part of a World Heritage Site, Jokhang Temple stands at 3,650 m (12,000 ft) above sea level. Built in 647 CE, the temple complex boasts a gilded 1,300-year-old, life-sized statue of the young Buddha. Considered the most sacred Buddhist temple in Tibet, the site draws millions of pilgrims year-round. The colorful architecture of this four-level timber complex features a mixture of Indian, Tibetan, Tang Chinese, and Nepalese styles. • Beautiful temple. It’s one of the oldest and has nice mural paintings. Always crowded with pilgrims. Do not miss the statue of Shakyamuni in the back. Nice terrace with view.  more »
  • A good visit, but I was ready to leave because it was so crowded. Remember it's a holy place and treat it as such, and you will enjoy your visit all the more.  more »

  • The temple itself is undoubtedly impressive and unique. But the true highlight of visiting is witnessing the incredible devotion of the local pilgrims.
