Explore the shores of Thousand Island Lake (Qiandao Hu), a vast, artificial body of water, known for housing more than a thousand islands. Formed in 1959 by the creation of the Xian river dam, the spacious lake has submerged an ancient city called “Lion City,” which can be explored on a diving excursion. Roam the lake’s verdant banks, adorned with statues and fountains at the entrance area, or take a boat ride and set off on the placid water. Sail to one of the islands that dot the waters of the lake, some of them nicknamed after the animals that inhabit them, such as “Snake Island” or “Monkey Island”.
