Great Wall at Huanghuacheng, Beijing

4.8
A fusion of human architectural prowess and natural defenses, Great Wall at Huanghuacheng provides a glimpse of the famous structure in a relatively unrestored state, with less tourist traffic than more famous sections. Explore this wild stretch of the wall as it climbs towering mountain hillsides and ridges next to a snaking reservoir, passing through dense forests along the way. You'll enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding countryside, including small villages and neighboring mountain peaks, as you trek across and beside the partially overgrown wall. Keep in mind that much of the wall here has not been restored, so be prepared for some rough stretches, and watch your step. • Simply amazing. We had already seen the Mutianyu section which is a very well preserved wall. We picked this since we wanted to get a feel for a more original untouched state of the wall. The climbs are not for the unfit. Winter sunset is amazing. The restaurant at the base of the climb is very good. If you don't speak Chinese, get a guide. Nearly impossible to communicate. We had lunch at one of the one room homes which the family uses as a restaurant as well. Very hospitable and delicious. Pictures will describe all this in detail.
  • Amazing view of nature! Hardly any tourists. Not the easiest hike. Be prepared for possible slippery steep path if the stone pavings are wet, good grip shoes recommended or go barefoot. The wind can be strong at times ... not for the faint hearted as there’s no side walls at some parts. Be happy to have the opportunity to sit on the Great Wall enjoying the breathtaking 360 view of mountains and beyond, soak up the perfect weather and ponder upon how they built this super long Great Wall and how the soldiers managed to march and fight in such conditions 🤔 I did 😊
