Trip Planner: South America / Chile / Santiago Metropolitan Region / Santiago / Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana)
Built over a period of five decades from 1748 to 1800, Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) was a long time in the making but, for those who appreciate spectacular architecture, worth every stone. The Spanish cathedral still serves as the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, and as the seat of the region's archbishop. The cathedral's twin spires, which used to tower imposingly over the city, now stand in the shadow of modern buildings--the cavernous interior still impresses. Admire the intricate frescoes adorning the roof, thousands of black and white tiles forming a pattern on the floor, and the stark, austere crypts. Quiet place to visit, just take care of the purses and mobiles, because the robberies are very subtle. They steal a bump on people.
Absolutely stunning church that is definitely work a look if you're nearby. From the amazing architecture outside to the grand vaulted ceilings and stained glass inside, it's quite a breathtaking building littered with historical elements. Went on a Sunday during church service and it was filled but not packed with still plenty of space to walk around.
Probably the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen in the Americas. The inside is just amazing.
