Architectural Building · Tourist Spot
Built over a period of five decades from 1748 to 1800, Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) was a long time in the making but, for those who appreciate spectacular architecture, worth every stone. The Spanish cathedral still serves as the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, and as the seat of the region's archbishop. The cathedral's twin spires, which used to tower imposingly over the city, now stand in the shadow of modern buildings--the cavernous interior still impresses. Admire the intricate frescoes adorning the roof, thousands of black and white tiles forming a pattern on the floor, and the stark, austere crypts. • Long stopover at a glorious hotel here but was bed-bound after a short flight from further South. Exceedingly proud people and excellent hosts during our short stay in their capital city. There was a heat wave during our stay and local concerns about global warming. Stay was soon over and then an interesting climb out-over the Andes. Large areas of deserted hills / mountains with some peaks topped-off with the white stuff.
  • We did not get much of an impression, when looking at the outside of the building, that the interior would be so large and spectacular. This was like finding a pearl inside of an oyster. We opted to sit for some time at the back of the cathedral before moving to seats up front; different experience in each location.
