Enjoy panoramic views over Santiago at Castillo Hidalgo. Built on the command of the Governor of Chile in 1816, the hilltop fort was designed to defend Spanish colonial interests from nationalist forces. After the country gained independence, the fort was renamed after fallen captain Manuel Hidalgo. For a building designed for defense, the fort displays ostentatious architecture, indicative of late Spanish colonialism. Shaded garden areas surround the fort, with the city laid out at the foot of the hill. Castillo Hidalgo is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

We spent our first day in Chile exploring the Castillo Hidalgo. It was a refreshing way to ease into the culture shock we would be facing during the rest of our stay in Santiago. Great history, great.... more »

The castle is currently used as an event space. The views of Santiago from the hill are great. Just remember, it's all uphill and watch your step. more »

Great place to visit! True Oasis from the busy streets of Santiago and don't forget to visit the trendy la starria neighborhood after you're done. Don't miss out on climbing all the way to the top for a great panoramic view!

What a wonderful oasis in the heart of the big city! My wife and I took a stroll through Castillo Hidalgo and the rest of the park on our first day in Santiago, Chile. It blew us away. Expecting a small, square type of park, we were pleasantly surprised when welcomed by the various flora and the breathtaking views from atop the castle.
