Salar de Tara, San Pedro de Atacama

#1 of 384 in Wildlife in Chile
Visitors often feel like they landed on another planet once they reach Salar de Tara, located on a high-altitude plateau in Chile's Atacama region. The salt flats play mind-bending tricks with your sense of perspective, surrounded in the distance by craggy moonscape terrain. After rain, the flats form shallow reflecting pools, creating an unforgettable opportunity to see almost perfect reflections of the landscape in the distance. Even more magical are the flocks of pink flamingoes, just waiting for you to take that perfect photo. Prepare to be hit by the altitude--at 4,800 m (15,750 ft), the thin air makes walking much more difficult than you might be used to. Take it easy and let your body acclimatize to the altitude. • When hiring the route of the Salares, make sure that the Tour will go to the Salar de Tara, because many companies do not go there. We went with Maxim and we didn't see Vans from other companies.

  • Great place, great landscaping. Ideal to know and take pictures. One more of the beautiful places of the Puna that are worth knowing. We went by car and could appreciate it from the viewpoint.

  • This place is awesome, you can get the by 4x4 car or you can take a tour. Is is located 100 km away from San Pedro de Atacama, but it is not only the salar, there are much more on the way there, for instance "monjes de la pacana"
  • This tour is worthwhile if guided by guide, to understand the wonder we are knowing. Central Andean sector, 5830 meters altitude. Follow Route 27: Towards the border with Bolivia and 25 km from Argentina there is no bathroom on the way, only those of nature. The guide stopped and served our breakfast at almost 4000 meters of altitude, near a pasture with llamas. Road with no stopping point, as in the whole region. Vegetation disappears, and we only see stones with elevation of altitude. We passed the caldera Bakana: Crater of the second largest volcano after eruption. Formation that emerged millions of years ago in the crater of 65x30 km. We visit the various salares: Salar de Putsa: This salar, at 4890 meters of altitude, is part of the National reserve of flamingos, emerged in 1971 in a worldwide agreement for the preservation of the species. The Andean Flamingos feed on phytoplankton present in the waters. Black Lake: It is part of the Salar of the Aguas Calientes. It is black because it has several colors of the more than 7000 species that produce substances, thousands of years ago. Iron and magnesium deposits that you see from the rocks. Kisquiro Salar: Flamingos: 130 million years old. They support-30 (negative grades) to more than 35 degrees positive, as they feed on species that survive in extreme temperatures. The egg in 25-30 days breaks and is placed in the Ashes. They feed on larvae and in and depending on their feeds the color of their plumage. Salar de loyoques: At 1800 meters of altitude, mining activities of Salitre and nitrate.
