Magdalena Island is a small island in the Strait of Magellan, Chile.History Magellan, definitely saw the island as he passed for the first time in the strait. Antonio Pigafetta, while speaking about the desertion of Sab Antonio cites in his famous book, :s:The First Voyage Round the World/Pigafetta's Account of Magellan's Voyage (Chap.79), that in to alert the crew of the ship if they ever try to get back:GeographyIt is located in Magallanes Region about 32 km northeast of the regional capital Punta Arenas. In 1982, it and nearby Marta Island were declared a national monument—Los Pingüinos Natural Monument. The island is the breeding location for several species of seabirds, most notably the Magellanic penguin. The penguin colony on the island has been monitored since 1998 and was estimated to hold 63,000 breeding pairs in 2007. The island is currently uninhabited.

  • The penguins are lovely but everyone that lands on the island go on the exact same path. So just choose a stable boat because the sea can be strong there. We were happy with Fiordos del Sur. The catam...  more »
  • I have done similar tours like the Beagle channel in Ushuaia and this one does not come close to them by far and above is more expensive. And I can say that even though the tour staff was very friendly, the tour itself has seemed like crap. EXPENSIVE price, I repeat, the views were not what I expected, they tell you 2.5 kms on the island, I think it is actually 1, but the island has nothing, seen the first 100 meters and the first penguins, seen everything. For that price I would expect more hard to explain well what the island is like, all its species, etc. On the boat during the trip they don't explain anything to you, on the return a brief explanation. No music, no videos, no audio... The very friendly guide was interested in all the groups one by one, but nothing more. For the price you pay you may well offer coffee or tea for free to warm up. I wouldn't repeat or recommend it to anyone

  • Good place to spot penguins. Best months to visit November to February.
  • Went with solo expeditions. Great trip and worth seeing. Takes about 30 mins bus to the ferry and then 40 mins to the island. If you are flying out at a later time (2-3pm), you can actually do this tour and get dropped off at the airport! Penguins are awesome to check out! Its amazing to see thousands of penguins walking around! During December you can see the newborn penguins, be sure to get out of the way of the adult penguins that are headed over to the ocean!
