Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, Puerto Montt

Hike through South America's equivalent of a California redwoods park at Parque Nacional Alerce Andino. Though it contains many trails, rivers, and waterfalls, the highlight of the park remains the Fitzroya cypress forest, covering approximately 200 sq km (77 sq mi). Explore the many paths leading through the forest, over the rivers, and up the mountains, and admire the views of pristine nature. Keep an eye out for deer and monkey species that call this area their home. With our international travel planner, Puerto Montt attractions like Parque Nacional Alerce Andino can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • We left early, excited lysing along the Carretera Austral where at some point turning left (if you come from the north) is the road that after about 7 km would take us to the park. Unfortunately the road is unpaved and we thought initially not to be a problem: also in other parks and areas we came across dirt roads but they are easily accessible even with a utility car. Unfortunately we were not able to follow this road: the potholes, the numerous turns and climbs and puddles made us make the decision to go back after a couple of km so as not to risk getting stuck. The problem is therefore not so much in the fact that the road was ground when the poor maintenance that makes it impossible to travel for tourists who like us have rented a utility vehicle.

  • Beautiful place. You can appreciate all the native trees of Los lagos región. If you are lucky you will see foxes, birds, frogs, and if you are more lucky who knows you will see a Puma. Remember that you can go to the park through the entrance of Lenca, chaica or through the entrance in Correntoso.
  • Nice walk from the park entrance (near Lenca) to the waterfalls and Alerce tree.
