Ahu Akahanga, Hanga Roa

#5 of 15 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
Ruin · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Visit the reputed burial ground of Hotu Mata, legendary king of Easter Island, at Ahu Akahanga. Lying face-up on the ceremonial platform and surrounded by a circle of rocks, the solemn moai monument marking the king's grave has been weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. Nevertheless, the monolith creates an atmosphere of solemn grandeur befitting royalty. Look for a small mound nearby, where it appears that several moai were toppled like dominoes. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Hanga Roa trip simple and quick.
