Rapa Nui Parque Nacional, Easter Island

#3 of 9 in Nature in Easter Island
World heritage site · National Park · Nature / Park
Set on an isolated and scarcely vegetated volcanic island, Rapa Nui Parque Nacional lures visitors with its mysterious history and monumental shrines and stone figures known as moai. Polynesians came to the island in big canoes around 300 CE, bringing many elements of their culture. As a tribute to the important ancestors of each clan, these newcomers created moai, which became taller and more stylized as time went by. Other attractions include two large craters, a pink sand beach, and a restored Orongo village with rock engravings on a mountain cliff. Though you can explore the island by foot, vehicle, or bike, some places, such as its highest peak Maunga Terevaka, can only be reached by horse. • The Rapa Nui National Park is not cheap as we pay 54,000 Chilean Peso (80US $) per person. You have no choice, because you come to Easter Island to admire the impressive Moai statues.  more »
  • The locals want their island to stay as it used to be with moais and history kept sacred. Tourists now jump hoops to get there & need to be invited & then have the correct form at the airport...  more »

  • It has been an amazing experience to see the statues in real life! The parks are scattered over the island and are all really clean and nice. One being more interesting than the other offcourse..
  • According to a video from a tourist that I saw. The park ranger felipe treated them so bad that arguing about them trespassing the property which on the video shows that is not true. That ranger felipe is not trained properly to work there, who ever is encharge there should take care of the personnel if they want to keep tourists coming. I hope I never have to go there to visit.
