Ahu Vinapu, Easter Island

4.4
#8 of 16 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
A remarkable example of primitive stonemasonry, Ahu Vinapu holds the remains of five moai in Rapa Nui National Park, a World Heritage Site. The ahu (stone platforms) stand as some of the largest in the park and consist of huge slabs of basalt rock. When you go, look for the towering, deteriorated red-stone monolithic column, which resembles a female moai. Besides these ruins, the area is largely un-excavated and un-restored. Take care when exploring, as some stone statues only just peek out of the ground. • If this is the first Ahu and Moai you visit, you might be impressed but for this island, it's a fairly regular site. There's nothing bad about it, it's just not as impressive as some of the bigger sites. I'd recommend that you do the Te Moai in some sort of order that provides a built-up of impressiveness; you'll leave the island anyway with a feeling that you don't have to see another Moai in your life but you might as well be entranced while you're here.
  • The quarry is incredible. Be sure to see the kneeling statue, the one that would have been the biggest ever (which is incomplete), and get up to the top to see the crator
