Ahu Te Pito Kura, Easter Island

On a rugged stretch of coastline, find Ahu Te Pito Kura, the largest moai ever made, and one of the few whose name has not been lost over time. Unfortunately, the monolith faces the floor, having been toppled along with the other moai during the Rapa Nui civil wars. Still, the monument's size is impressive--10 m (33 ft) tall and weighing around 70 tons--as are the stories that surround him. Located close by in the same site, find a large, polished oval rock, surrounded by a low stone wall. Its high iron content confuses compasses, and some believe it to be charged with a powerful mystical energy. • Claims it's the largest statute on the island but is is broken up. I wouldn't go out of my way for this but if you have time check it out, the perfectly round stones are interesting.  more »
  • If you have limited time I suggest missing this. It is said to be the site of the largest Moai ever built and a magnetic round stone smoothed down from being under water.  more »

  • Fallen moai of some one memory is a reminder of our own thinking for rituals followed in terms of birth and death. Magnetic rocks on the shore line is impressive to feel the perseverance of time in this beautiful island.
