Parque Cultural Ruinas de Huanchaca, Antofagasta

#2 of 12 in Museums in Antofagasta Region
Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
Imagine the roar of machinery in motion more than a century ago at Parque Cultural Ruinas de Huanchaca, an abandoned silver foundry. When it opened in 1892, the building was the most modern refinery in South America, though its technology soon became outdated and the site closed in 1902. The thick stone walls create a bold impression in the surrounding desert landscape, and the well-preserved interior offers a good introduction to the silver refining process. Explanations of the processes and machinery used, presented as informative exhibits, paint a picture of the people who worked in the building. Put Parque Cultural Ruinas de Huanchaca on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Antofagasta road trip planning website.

  • Good to walk around if you've never been. Not an extensive area. May be best with visit to the museum.
