At Crypt Lake Trail, embark on one of the nation's great outdoor experiences. Said by many to be Canada’s best hike, the trail offers both a great escape from urban life and memorable views of a range of scenery and vegetation. Take the ferry that transports hikers to the beginning of the trail and choose one of the two routes for your ascent. If you take the longer one, you'll get to see the famous Hellroaring Falls. Cross the mountain streams and marvel at the dramatic Crypt Falls, as they plunge beneath into Crypt Lake. Take a dip in the refreshing waters of the lake, then hike back to catch your ferry. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, and bring lots of water. Make Crypt Lake Trail a centerpiece of your Waterton Lakes National Park vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Waterton Lakes National Park trip itinerary maker site.

  • One of the most beautiful hikes I have done so far! Definitely recommended for all ages. Be careful if you afraid of heights, expect to be scared just a lil bit.  more »
  • We did the Crypt Lake hike in September. The hike was our highlight of our 4 weeks in North America and we were building up to this hike. We were fortunate enough to see a grizzly with 3 cubs at the....  more »

  • A must do when visiting Waterton. You will not regret doing this hike. Beautiful views, well maintained trails and lots of interesting sections of trail. Make sure you do have the fitness level for a 17+ KM hike. Also depending on season pack for mountain weather. We've had +20 degrees along the beginning of the trail, with sections of deep snow near the top and cool weather. Bring lots of water. Now there is one negative to this trail. The amount of people can be staggering. We've been stuck in literal "traffic jams" on the cliff scramble section. Where people are stuck going in either direction. This can be an absolute pain and hopefully the people will all be working together to keep things moving. If hiking with a dog, be sure you are prepared for the ladder. We thought we were but found out we were not. Luckily, with the help of some awesome hikers we were able to raise and lower the dog safely.
  • A wonderfuly gorgeous hike! I was nervous about how difficult it would be after reading reviews, however I loved it and had no fear while using the cable line. It’s a long day, so bring snacks! Definitely an unforgettable experience!
