The Bateman Gallery, Victoria

Art Museum · Hidden Gem · Museum
At The Bateman Gallery, discover the life and seven decades of work of Canada's most famous wildlife artist. Sited on the second floor of the 1924 Steamship Terminal--a landmark building of Victoria's Inner Harbor--the center boasts more than 100 works accompanied with multi-media commentary. Learn how Bateman's childhood adventures in urban gullies of central Toronto, his trips to Africa, and travels throughout the world shaped his style and vision as an artist. See his earliest flirtations with abstract art styles as well as small, intense landscape paintings of historical farms and ploughed fields, where human meets nature. You'll also have the chance to view portraits of his family and closest friends. A special part of his opus is a series of paintings of bird, which Bateman calls "canaries in the coal mine." A selection of Inuit stone carvings supplements the Bateman collection. • Small gallery with a few Bateman pieces - when we visited there was only a large show on S.Woolfes art that was very informative and inspiring on forest fires. Entry is by donation only.  more »
  • Entrance by donation. The Bateman story is interesting, but only takes about 1/2 hr. Did not care much for the other artist's exibition.  more »
  • Small, but very cute exhibition of paintings chosen with love and care. I was really impressed by great work of the entire team and enjoyed this place a lot. They absolutely leave Vancouver Art Gallery in the dust. Will come again at my next visit to the island.
  • I received some passes from the library to bring my family. We were welcomed by a modest venue that manages to get a lot of really fabulous works from Robert Bateman (and others!) into a small space. There's a special spot that my 4 year old loved - a small alcove that has some intricate and meticulously painted birds with the sounds they make. Great homage to a local legend.
