If you find yourself in Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood, Gastown, make sure to visit Steam Clock. Although the facade and machinery appear to hail from the Victorian era, the clock was actually built in 1977 as a tourist attraction, with great success. Only the second clock ever powered by a steam mechanism, and one of only six remaining in the world, the quaint timepiece not only attracts tourists, but it also once served a humane purpose--the steam warmed the area, and homeless people would sleep around the clock. Every 15 minutes, the clock whistles and shoots steam, so bring a camera with you and wait. Take a look at our Vancouver tour planner to schedule your visit to Steam Clock and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • We visited the Steam Clock on a rainy evening. I read that the clock really isn't steam powered as it has electric motors. It does however let off steam every hour and plays Westminster Quarters...  more »

  • We humans are so simple. It's just a silly old clock that blows air through tubes. Like an organ. It makes a charming sound and plays a tune. It's old its history and people crowd around in good spirits showing each other kindness and delight. Amazing how we can be brought together through charm and simplicity. Lovely. So what are you waiting for? Go see the clock. :)
  • Gastown Vancouver is full of shops, restaurants and coffee bars. I rent a really nice apartment in Gastown and enjoy the atmosphere Immensely. Gastown is very historical and a joy to visit. The steam clock is a big attraction in Gastown. It's worth checking out the sites any time of the year. Oh and don't forget the annual custom bike show in Gastown!
