This island is home to the mammalian species of black bear, cougar, and wolf. There is some concern about wolves in the parks becoming habituated, after two wolves had to be killed because of their attack on a male sleeping camper on July 2, 2000. For both human safety and the future of the wolf population in Clayoquot Sound, food must be stored out of reach of wildlife and animals must not be approached or fed by visitors.
The island is apparently named for Diego de Vargas, who regained New Mexico for Spain in 1693–94.

Vargas Island's westside is one of those magical places you'll never forget especially on a summer day. Ahous Bay is where Gray Whale mother's bring their calves as it is shaped like a bowl and... more »
Excellent Adventure Day Hike is Vargas Island. You could even Camp on the Desolate Island if you Wanted. Bring Long Pants and Bug Spray, Boots Might be Helpful as Well. We had a Super Fun Day and Were also Greeted by Two Whales who were Eating and Playing around in the Waters off the Beach. Highly Recommend Tofino Water Taxi to Drop you Off.
A bit of effort to get to, but it has incomparable beauty.
