Mount Douglas Park, Saanich

Mount Douglas Secondary School is a four-year public secondary school located in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, with around 1,200 students on roll. The school is part of the Greater Victoria School District, and is known locally as "Mount Doug". In 2003, the school changed from a Senior Secondary model, teaching grades 11 and 12, back to the current and original grades 9 to 12 structure. The school was founded in 1931, and over the years has occupied several buildings beginning at the current Cedar Hill Middle School Campus. In 1970, it relocated to the former Gordon Head Junior Secondary School building after that school relocated to the newly constructed Arbutus Middle School campus.
Mount Douglas Secondary is a host campus for the Challenge program, which offers gifted and talented students the opportunity to learn in a classroom environment adapted for a better education. To be accepted into the Challenge program, a student must apply, write a skills test and submit a portfolio of his or her achievements. After being accepted into the Challenge program, a student can choose to attend Mount Douglas or the other school in the district that offers the Challenge program, Esquimalt High School. Mount Doug also runs optional Honors and Advanced Placement programs in addition to the Challenge program. There are 81 full-time teachers employed at Mount Doug.

  • Great, though short, visit to Mt Douglas recently -- just WOW. Drove to the top, then did the quick (3 min?) walk up to the peak from there. Lots of trails, in warmer weather would be a full day if....  more »
  • Mount Doug has alot of hiking trails, this is a very popular place, so at times can be hard to find a parking spot, but if you are patient, it won't be long brfore a space becones available.  more »
  • The park has a number of well marked walking and hiking trails that are suitable for a variety of skill levels. A network of trails circle the base of the mountain, while there are various others that lead to the summit. Alternatively, a paved road (closed each morning) leads to the lookout point near the summit. The park is dog friendly, and dogs are often off leash. Outhouses are available at the lookout point and select locations at the base. I usually find it takes us between 30-60 minutes to summit, depending on the route we take. Easier to descend via the road.
  • 360 degrees vista of panoramic views of Victoria and its surrounding small islands. You can drive up the hill or you can hike up the place from several places which are marked. Bring a light fleece as there is always a chance of some cool breeze. The views are really fantastic no matter when you go there. Capture sunrise or sunset.
