The FCEF was formed as a non-profit organization in 1988 with the support of Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC)* and a few of the department’s retirees. They set out a plan to recruit volunteers and members in the belief that such a volunteer organization, concerned about retention of the public areas of the Farm for heritage reasons and public enjoyment, could make a major contribution to the Farm’s future. This plan was essential to ensure continued public access to and enjoyment of the Ornamental Gardens and Arboretum.

The Friends’ mission is to maintain and enhance the Ornamental Gardens and Arboretum as directed by AAFC’s Arboretum Staff and Ornamental Gardens Staff.

The Friends also became versatile in creating several annual fundraising events to engage the public in many different ways on the Farm. With these funds the Friends are able to play an active role on various Farm projects of heritage value.

AAFC provides office space for the Friends in Building 72, adjacent to the Arboretum. We share this building with AAFC’s Arboretum and Ornamental Gardens Staff.

  • Wether its a stroll among the gardens, or a visit to the animals. It is truly a serene experience. Close to downtown and a stones throw from the beautiful canal. A must see  more »
  • Nice place to visit if you want to see some Canadian agriculture in practice. Nice grounds to visit but little kids might get bored.  more »

  • Historical site. Lots of heritage buildings, arboretum, botanical gardens, the Agriculture museum, and a lot of Agriculture and Agrifood Canada research offices and laboratories. It's a large farm in the middle of Ottawa, Dow's Lake nearby, and the Rideau canal. Very pleasant to walk, bike, or ski(winter) through. Not as accessible as other large city parks like NYC central park because it is farm.
  • There are always great activities going on at the experimental farm. Went to some sort of insect festival recently. Tons of great educational activities for kids. There were microscopes and live bugs along with bug ice cream. It's tasted fine but I kept finding cricket legs in my teeth after. I won't subtract stars for that because it's not the experimental farm's fault. I welcome the opportunity to try out insect food. We'll all be eating bugs in the dark future that awaits us and our children. Five stars!!
