Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, Montreal

4.6
One of the city's oldest religious landmarks, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel welcomed generations of sailors and settlers arriving at the port. The 18th-century stone church stands on the site of an earlier 17th-century chapel. In the 19th century, seafarers expressed their gratitude to Our Lady of Good Help by offering models of ships, hung in the interior of the chapel. Today, you can see the votive gifts in the adjacent museum, together with dolls made by nuns arranged to form 58 scenes from the life of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys--the patroness of the original chapel. Climb a narrow spiral staircase to get to the roof, which offers scenic views of the old town. • We decided to visit the chapelle and to our surprise, the belvédère was open. Well worth going up the stairs for a fabulous view of Old Port. A visit of the crypt and archeological site are a must...  more »
  • This hidden gem allows you to climb the wooden stairs to the bellevedere on the top, with great view of the St. Lawrence with the old port, remnants of Expo 67 and, of course, angels on the chapel...  more »

  • This is my favourite church in Montreal. I just love the votive boats and ships suspended from above, offerings for the protection, and thanks for the salvation of seafarers. Intimate and beautiful.
  • This is a beautiful small chapel with an amazing history. The audio tour is very well done and the exhibits are informative. Don't miss the crypt and the guided tour of the current dig, incredible.
