Roam the stalls of Jean-Talon Market, a farmers market in the Little Italy district of Quebec's largest city. Named after Jean Talon, the first intendant of New France, the market opened in 1933 and has since become a focal point of the neighborhood. Wander the rows of open air-stalls filled with colorful fruits, vegetables, fresh meat, and seafood. Sample local snacks or baked goods, visit gourmet stores for some artisan cheeses and wine, or get a hot cup of coffee to sample as you explore. Jean Talon Market is a HUGE farmer's market definitely worth visiting. It's just north of Little Italy in a fun part of town and is open seven days a week. Don't go right when they open on a weekday. Wait an hour or so to let the vendors get up and running. The middle of the market is an open area with picnic tables and many stalls serving lunch, coffee, and even ice cream. The rest of the vendors sell fresh produce and other items. If you love farmers markets, this one is excellent!
Look, the Jean Talon market is a Montreal institution. It's a wonderful smorgasbord of fresh produce and foods and the atmosphere is convivial. However, price wise, this is no longer a standard farmers market, but more an uppity specialty shop. And even at that we would return occasionally, if only for the atmosphere. But now (actually last year, I think, but had forgotten) they've banned leashed dogs, even though it's still OUTDOORS. We've travelled all over Europe (having just returned from another trip). Leashed dogs are allowed essentially everywhere. Markets, shops and even restaurants. Not a problem for anyone, and as far as i can tell, no one died A change of attitude by the management is in order. We won't be returning.
