A dramatic 50 m (160 ft) drop located in the heart of Jasper National Park, Maligne Canyon offers memorable views and diverse flora and fauna. Trickling waterfalls, nesting ravens and black swifts, underground stream outlets, and ancient fossils are all hidden amongst the verdant beauty. You can discover it all by walking along a series of trails and traversing four impressive bridges. As you hike through the unspoilt landscape, notice the unusual rock formations, carved out of the Palliser formation, a layer of limestone deposited by plankton some 365 million years ago. A visit to Maligne Canyon represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Jasper National Park trip itinerary site to plot your vacation.

  • Amazing canyon. Took about 2 hours for trek to sixth bridge and back. Highly recommend taking a good camera and walking boots. The trail affords thrilling views even in October end. The emerald green water is crystal clear. On return take the higher path as it avoids steps and gives you a higher viewpoint of the scenery.
  • This scenic spot is very high on the must-do list when visiting jasper! The parking lot is less than 10 minutes from town and the hike down and back can be done in an easy hour, but I'd recommend you pack a snack and plan to spend 3+ hours because rain or shine it is beautiful and can be very relaxing. The walk down is very icy about 8 months of the year, so buy or rent some traction for your footwear and hold on to the railings.
