Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, Fort Macleod

4.6
Visit the World Heritage Site of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, which preserves a prehistoric custom of the native people that inhabited the plains. Situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the buffalo jump is a cliff used by the Blackfoot tribe to hunt and kill bison. Herding them over the cliff edge, the hunters let the animals fall to their death, dragging them afterwards to a butchering site. Visit the cliff and the interpretive center, and see exhibits about the history and culture of the tribes. To plan Fort Macleod vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

  • Interesting place to go and learn about some of Alberta's indigenous history. Good trail walk and the interpretive centre has a good mix of videos and exhibits. You can also do a short trail hike at the and see the top of the cliff. The views of the prairies are beautiful! There's also a shuttle from the parking lot to the centre but it is also easily walkable. If you want to take your time there then you can probably spend about 2 hours there.
  • I've wanted to visit head smashed in Buffalo jump since I was 9 years old. I was so excited to finally get the chance. It was everything I hoped it could be. The museum was very well done, and I loved the top down learning style. The trails surrounding the information centre are well maintained. The guides are wonderful and well informed. I was so happy to finally get to this beautiful world heritage site.
