#1 of 11 in Museums in Banff National Park
Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies tells the stories of the mountain town, the indigenous people of the area, and the resilient pioneers who built a life among the Canadian Rockies. The museum boasts various exhibits including photographs, films, audio recordings, maps, out-of-print publications, and newspapers dating from the early 1800s to the present day. Peter and Catharine Whyte, founders of the museum, started the collection by donating the artifacts they and their friends gathered. The museum's fine art collection features a surprising number of women artists and naturalists. Take a leaflet for a self-guided tour. Visit the cabins of notable residents at the complex, known as the heritage homes. See the photographs of a pioneer photographer of the Canadian Rockies, Byron Harmon, and sit in an old helicopter and a 1920s automobile. • Both the art gallery and the heritage displays were excellent. The "women of the Rockies" display was my favourite. The gift shop had a great book selection.
