Phimeanakas, Siem Reap

#22 of 57 in Historic Sites in Siem Reap
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Ruin
Explore the ruins of Phimeanakas, 10th-century Hindu temple resembling a three-tier pyramid. Five traditional towers stand at the entrance, and the ancient, overgrown edifice creates a striking impression. Take a tour and hear the story of a king who allegedly remained in the tower every night with the embodiment of Naga, the snake goddess, in order to preserve and maintain peace and prosperity in the country. Walk around and enjoy the views from the ground, but bear in mind that climbing the temple is not advised. • Climb the steep steps all the way to the top of this beautiful (usually quiet) temple. Not one of the main big ones, so fewer people visit.
  • Very pleasant temple, quiet and far from mass tourism. Recommend.
