Angkor Thom South Gate, Siem Reap

#30 of 57 in Historic Sites in Siem Reap
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Angkor Thom South Gate is the best preserved part of the late 12th-century walls that once enveloped the "Great City"--whether for protection or for ceremonial purposes it"s not quite clear. The intricately carved stone gate adorned with numerous statues of Hindu deities, some riding elephants and carrying weapons, is a great starting point for many Angkor Thom tours. The most prominent features remain the huge faces atop the central tower and the two rows of guardian gods and demon gods that flank the causeway across the moat. Pulling an enormous snake in opposite directions, they represent the myth of the Churning of the Ocean.
