Ta Som, Siem Reap Province

Visit Ta Som, a small 12th century-temple in the ancient city of Angkor. Nestled in a wooded area, the temple dates back to the rule of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the temple, surrounded by a shady grove, and admire its stone ruins, adorned with intricate carvings and figurines. Nature has blended with the man-made structures of this ancient site, with one of the gopuram, or entrance walls, completely overgrown by a sacred fig tree, making for a great photo opportunity. • This not one of the top 5 nor top 10 temples in Siam Reap. Which is the reason why usually it is not visited on your 1st day there. Actually, if you have chosen to buy the day tours offered there by y...  more »
  • Honestly, we've been very disappointed. We don't know what it was like before, but now it's a flea market rather than a place of worship. It's very angry to be walking around and seeing nature and the temple and being stopped every metre to sell you fruit, drawings, magnets, pants, scarves.. they could already make sure that didn't happen INSIDE the enclosure.

  • This is a very atmospheric temple which is easy to visit as it isn't big and there is no climbing of dangerously steep steps! On top of those positives, it wasn't very busy compared to the big temples and you also get another (less well-known) overgrown temple building. It's at the west entrance which is the opposite to the visitor entrance/exit on the east side. Make sure you walk all the way to the west entrance and actually walk through it to view the fig tree which has encased the gateway. Sadly many people don't know it's there and turn back too soon. There was a fairly persistent begging/selling scene here. Not sure if it isn't policed very well but there were a lot of children of school age involved. What I really enjoy about these temples and this is a great example, is the aesthetic of a ruin, overgrown and in a state of weathered decay, is actually what these buildings are most famous for. It not about how wonderful and perfect they used to be (amazing as that was) it is now about the new aesthetic of decay and collapse. It looks like a film set or a work of art from every angle. It's a lost and world yes but these temples live and breathe today as ruins in their own right. Fabulous.
  • Not overcrowded version of Ta Prohm temple😊 Looks very similar but more distant from the city of Siem Reap. Definitely worth visiting if you are sensitive to people’s energy or looking for some peaceful place. Stone reliefs are beautiful👌🏻
