An impressive landmark of Phnom Penh, Independence Monument commemorates Cambodia’s patriots and war victims in the central part of the city. Featured on the 100 riel banknote, this impressive 20 m (66 ft) tall lotus-shaped structure takes after Angkor Wat, celebrating the country’s independence from foreign rule. Erected in 1962, with carved multi-headed "Naga" snakes bursting out of the corners of lotus petals, this red-brown stone monument stands as the centerpiece of a roundabout surrounded by a large park area. The ignition of a flame under the arch and frequent flower-laying ceremonies take place at the site. Get a close-up view of the guards by foot, or admire this well-lit, majestic structure at night from afar.
