See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. • The symbol of Sofia, such as alexander Nevsky's Church is dedicated to the Russian prince who defeated the Swedes in the middle of the 1200s, and was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century to celebrate the victory over the Turks that took some ten years before. It impresses with its majesty, deliberately inserted in the square of the same name to make it stand out even more; its large golden dome is surrounded by other semi domes that rest in turn on other smaller ones. Even the large bell tower ends with a golden dome. If outside it is majestic, internally denounces all its wealth: marbles everywhere, gold for iconostasis, two important thrones with other marbles, onmics and lioness statues for the king and bishop; frescoes with saints with Abyzantine imprint and scenes from the gospel in the style called "historical romance" and large chandeliers for lighting. Admission is free, you have to pay few leverage for photos. A sight for the eyes.

  • Beautiful cathedral, outside and inside. It is advisable to read about the cathedral and then see in concrete the descriptions, huge chandeliers, giant bells, beautiful murals. In principle, photography is not allowed in the interior (it is possible to pay 10 per booth).
