King Ferdinand of Romania commissioned Palace and Botanical Gardens of Balchik for his wife, Queen Marie, in 1926. Its architecture is a blend of Balkan and Asian styles. The main building's minaret tops a Christian chapel. The park's collection of large cactus species was the second of its kind in Europe and features flowers brought from various parts of the world. Other attractions include residential villas, a smoking hall, wine cellar, monastery, holy spring, water mill, and chapel.
