Bachkovo Monastery, Bachkovo

Bachkovo Monastery is home to a silver-encased icon of the Virgin allegedly painted by St. Luke. Learn about the monastery's history from the frescoes in the former refectory, and view a marble table from 1601 in the dining room. Two churches in the monastery's courtyard feature 19th-century wall paintings by the prominent Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. Enter the chapel to see a depiction of the Last Judgment; seek out the agitated Turks on the right and Zograf's self-portrait in the left corner. Other highlights include the 17th-century iconostasis, church plates, covers of manuscripts, and other pieces of applied art. The ossuary, a two-story stone tomb, is the only building preserved from the original monastery. • We've been looking at the monastery. The first of the Churches Very Nice and the refectory (3 euros/person) after insisting on seeing it was spectacular. The museum was closed. As a whole it is worth visiting.

  • Beautiful monastery although not as impressive as Rila's. Two churches, beautiful frescoes and you can see the monks and the popes. Loaded with history, you breathe tranquility and history. The climb to the monastery from the place where you have to leave the vehicles has a lot of charm since on both sides of the road is all full of craft stalls with ceramic items, leather, glass, miniatures that make the way more entertaining. Nice memories to take away. Recommended.

  • Very beautiful monastery! The yard itself is really pleasant to just rest for a bit, with beautiful water fountains and 100-year old trees. Make sure to find the peacocks located in a separate enclosure out of the way. The inside of the church has been renovated recently - the ceiling is particularly impressive, with sparkling gold inlays contrasting against the dark pain of the murals and icons.
  • Beautiful calm place of meditation and worship. Church with lovely icons. Surroundings also beautiful. On a Tuesday in October very few visitors.
