Meeting of the Waters, Santarem

Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Santarém is a city bordered by the Amazon River and its tributary the Tapajós, which together create a natural phenomenon locals call Meeting of the Waters. Once the two rivers meet, they run side by side without ever mixing their waters. This rare occurrence is created by the two rivers’ difference in temperature and density. The Amazon’s cool brown water carries sediment from the Andes, while the Tapajós’s water is somewhat warmer and has a deep blue tone. Make sure to choose a spot high above the rivers, like the popular Mirante do Tapajós, to get an unobstructed view of both colors flowing side by side, and to appreciate the sheer size of the Amazon, the second longest river in the world.
