Pelourinho, Salvador

Neighborhood · Other
A stroll through the historic Colonial district, Pelourinho brings you past brightly colored Renaissance buildings decorated with fine stucco work. This district has an extreme wealth of historical monuments dating back to the 17th through 19th centuries. Nicknamed "Pelô" by residents, this old part of the upper city encompasses several blocks around a triangular Largo. The large open-air market offers artistic and cultural souvenirs, as well as churches, museums, and shops housed in pastel-colored buildings. You'll find decadent restaurants and cafés and a lively local music scene with a bustling nightlife. Percussion musicians play drums in the streets including the areas signature berimbaus, which you can buy in several of the surrounding shops. Make Pelourinho a part of your Salvador vacation plans using our Salvador trip planner.
