Enjoy a challenging ascent on the site of a famous historical blunder at Pedra da Gavea, a granite and gneiss mountain overlooking Guanabara Bay. Portuguese sailors mistook the bay for an estuary and named the whole area January River, or Rio de Janeiro. At 844 m (2,769 ft), this ranks among the highest mountains in the world that ends directly in the ocean, and offers an advanced and rewarding hike. Expect a steep section of rock climbing, but the payoff comes at the clifftop vantage point, once used to monitor ship traffic. See the rock "carving" that sparked a long controversy among scholars: a natural formation caused by erosion, or a Phoenician or indigenous prehistoric man-made message? • Pedra da Gavea is an amazing experience! I love the hike so much I've been up at least a dozen times, maybe more - I've never bothered to count! You don't need a guide, as long as you find the start.....  more »
  • Amazing view, excelent exercise. It takes +-3hrs for a medium group (4-8 people). Better go with a local guide.  more »
