Instead of paying for the cable car rides up the Sugarloaf Mountain, most locals simply hike up Morro da Urca. This 215-m (705 ft) hill offers sweeping views of Corcovado, Copacabana, Guanabara Bay, and the Sugarloaf itself, which you can’t see when you’re actually on it. The hill is noted for being an important part of one of the largest urban rock climbing areas in the world, with more than 270 routes. You can, of course, always opt to take the cable car to the top of the hill, which features a visitor center, food stands, restrooms, and a souvenir shop. Plan your visit for a clear and sunny day, as the top of Sugarloaf and the surrounding hills often become enveloped in thick fog and clouds. Take a look at our Rio de Janeiro trip itinerary builder app to schedule your visit to Morro da Urca and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.
