Flamengo Beach, Rio de Janeiro

3.5
With its side-on view of Sugarloaf Mountain, the landscape of Flamengo Beach has been painted and photographed countless times. Thanks to its incredibly fine, white sand, the beach is a hot spot for jogging, soccer, volleyball, and other beach sports. Unlike its world famous sibling the Copacabana, Flamengo Beach is frequented mostly by locals, and you are less likely to be hassled by hawkers and other tourist traps. Like all beaches in Rio de Janeiro, water quality is an issue, but this is steadily improving as the government implements better sewage treatment facilities. • There are some amazing views of the sugar loaf, Christ the Redeemer, etc from here, but do not go in the water. The bay is badly polluted.  more »
  • I've been to this place twice. It's a good place to go biking or trekking. There is an airport nearby. The downside of this beach is that the sea is polluted but I saw some people swimming in the wate...  more »

  • Great beach that's not super crowded, centrally located near downtown Rio and a close walk from the SDU domestic airport or many other attractions within the city center. Part of the "Walk Rio" project which has created an amazing bike lane and pedestrian walkway all along the beach which also connects it along the beach to many other areas of Rio. On a beautiful sunny day in Brazil, it's a great place to come out and enjoy the sun and beautiful, luscious sand.
  • In the morning, until some 11 hours, the beach of Flamengo is very quiet, pleasant, still water, with small marolas, frequated by locals. The sand is clean and the sea, apparently clean. After that time, the tide fills up and the sea gets very dirty.
