Carioca Aqueduct, Rio de Janeiro

3.6
Admire the arches of Carioca Aqueduct, an impressive Roman-style aqueduct. Carrying potable water from the Carioca River, the aqueduct spans 270 m (886 ft) over 42 stone arches, standing 40 m (131 ft) tall. Built by the Portuguese in 1723 to provide Rio with drinking water, the structure required the combined efforts of Indios and African slaves. Since 1896, the aqueduct has served as a bridge for a tram service climbing up Santa Teresa Hill from the city center. Various events are frequently held at the plaza next to the iconic structure. • We did a quick drive-by of the aqueduct during a Rio highlights tour we were on. We made the driver stop and asked the tour guide to give us a bit more detail about this seemingly out of place structure in the middle of the city. What started out as a mechanism to deliver water to the fountains spread throughout the city is now a pathway for the tram shuffling people to and fro.
  • Nice place as a start of going out in lapa.
