Associacao Peixe-Boi, Porto de Pedras

Wildlife Area · Educational Site
Visit Associacao Peixe-Boi for an up close look at a manatee specie in danger of extinction. This ecotourism site is also home to a project aimed at protecting the endangered mammal and its disappearing mangrove habitat. Project staff can take you on a boat tour up the river, where you are likely to come face-to-face with this creature. Manatees are free to roam these waters and tend to spend a lot of time asleep at the bottom of the river. Project members maintain several rafts along the shore, which the docile animals approach at the sight of visitors. Keep in mind that feeding and touching the manatees is strictly forbidden, though you can photograph them. Bring your children along for a real-life lesson in environmental conservation. Make Associacao Peixe-Boi a centerpiece of your Porto de Pedras vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Porto de Pedras trip itinerary builder tool.
