Metropolitan Cathedral, Porto Alegre

#1 of 45 in Historic Sites in Porto Alegre
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
The most immediately striking feature of Metropolitan Cathedral--an early 20th-century neoclassical cathedral--is the frontpiece adorned with colorful mosaics. The mosaics depict the history of the catholic church in Brazil, and they help to relieve the somber character of this otherwise imposing building. Inside you will find two huge and intricate stained glass windows and a beautiful Baroque statue of the Virgin and Child, enshrined against a mural by Aldo Locatelli. In general, however, the decoration avoids ostentation, preferring instead to let the elegant proportions and geometric details of the architecture speak for themselves.
