#1 of 13 in Museums in Niteroi
The UFO-shaped Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Niteroi exhibits works by contemporary Brazilian and international artists. The unusually shaped structure is the brainchild of none other than famed architect Oscar Niemeyer and, with a collection of over 1,200 artworks, remains one of the largest and most significant institutions of its kind in the country. Looking from the museum's observation room you can see the bay below, the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the surrounding mountainous landscape. The museum restaurant is a great place for discussing the art over a meal or a drink. Put Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Niteroi at the forefront of your travel plans using our Niteroi planner .

  • If you go to Rio de Janeiro, be sure to visit Niterói. This museum is a fantastic work by architect Oscar Niemeyer and deserves a visit. In addition to the museum, Niterói boasted beautiful beaches. Stay the tip!

  • an interesting ride for a summer morning. Niemeyer's beautiful architecture designed with mastery for the site,(a seaside elevation), provides from within the museum and through huge windows throughout its circumference, a 360th view of Guanabara Bay and much of the waterfront of Niterói. On the day of our visit, it gave me the impression that the museum itself, did not have a considerable permanent collection, and only what had available were some traveling artists exposing. Maybe the museum's curatorship is too weak.

  • One of the places in Rio with spectacular building structure and a good view. There is also a wonderful experience of contemporary art and a show of colours mixed with the sound of the waves as they break on the rocks below from the view in the windows of the museum. It's wonderful. However, I believe it lacks more expository art
  • The building of the museum is great and definitely worth seeing. The exhibition when we visited however was "too minimalist" to put it extremely kindly. There was basically nothing.
