Museu do Morro da Caixa D'agua Velha is a museum dedicated to the history of water conservation and beginnings of modern urban development of the city. It features a permanent exhibition of iron pipes and old records of registered users for water supply. Far more interesting than the display is the building itself: it is the city’s former water reservoir dating from 1882 build to supply more than 20,000 inhabitants with drinkable water. A Roman style aqueduct built using wooden beams, clay, and brick, the tank had the capacity to store one million liters (264,172 gallons) of water.
