Portao do Inferno, Chapada dos Guimaraes

#11 of 15 in Nature in Chapada dos Guimaraes
Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
Portao do Inferno is breathtakingly beautiful; lush green vegetation contrasts with the reddish rock of the canyon, and in the distance, you can see prehistoric sand dunes. Located at a particularly dangerous curve along the highway from Cuiabá and with a sheer drop of over 80 m (262 ft), you must take care if you stop for a closer look. The name--“Hell's Gate” in English--has a medieval origin, when anything that was large and hole-like was associated with the underworld. In the early 1900s, Portao do Inferno served as the town “prison” and, given its geological features, you can imagine what that meant.
